Polarised vs Non-Polarised Sunglasses: Which Should You Buy?

Polarised sunglasses are the better buy for driving, water, and any bright day spent around reflective surfaces; non-polarised sunglasses are the better buy for pilots, for anyone who reads LCD screens outdoors all day, and for skiers who need to see ice. What does a polarised lens actually do?

Light bouncing off a flat surface, a wet road, a lake, the bonnet of the car in front, arrives at your eye largely as horizontal waves. That concentrated horizontal light is what we experience as glare. A polarised lens carries a chemical filter with its molecules aligned so that horizontal light is blocked and vertical light passes through. The American Academy of Ophthalmology compares it to the slats of a miniblind: light gets through the gaps, not through the slats.

Reflections off water disappear and you see beneath the surface. The white sheen on a wet motorway goes dark and the lane markings come back. The AAO’s summary is that “objects look crisper and clearer with polarized lenses, and details are easier to see” (AAO, What Are Polarized Lenses For?, reviewed J. A non-polarised lens does none of this. It dims all light equally, so glare is dimmer but still there, still competing with the detail you want to see.

Does polarised mean UV protected?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding in sunglass buying. Polarisation deals with visible light and glare. UV protection deals with ultraviolet radiation you cannot see at all. They are separate treatments applied to the lens, and a manufacturer can supply one without the other.

The AAO is explicit: a lens labelled as blocking UV “does not mean they are polarized too”. The reverse holds as well. When you buy, look for two separate statements on the label or the product page: “polarised” and “UV400” (or “100% UVA and UVB”). UV400 means the lens blocks ultraviolet wavelengths up to 400 nanometres, which covers both the UVA and UVB bands. The American Optometric Association’s recommendation is that sunglasses “block out 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation” (AOA, Ultraviolet (UV) protection, aoa.org, retrieved 6 September 2026).

One consequence: a very dark lens without UV filtering is worse than no sunglasses, because the darkness opens the pupil to more unfiltered UV. Darkness is comfort. UV400 is protection.

Polarised vs non-polarised: which wins in each situation?

Neither type wins everywhere. Polarisation solves one specific problem, and in a few situations that problem is one you would rather keep.

The pilot case is the clearest. The FAA’s pilot safety brochure states plainly that “polarized lenses are not recommended for use in the aviation environment”, and recommends a neutral grey tint that transmits 15 to 30% of visible light (FAA, Sunglasses for Pilots: Beyond the Image, faa.gov, retrieved 6 September 2026). If you fly, buy non-polarised for the cockpit and keep a polarised pair for the drive to the airfield.

Skiing is less settled. One optician-authored guide notes that “some opticians advise against wearing polarized lenses when skiing, because you may be unable to see the icy patches on slopes”, while acknowledging that the same lenses reduce the bounce-back of sunlight off snow (Liz DeFranco ABOC NCLC, Ski Goggles: Which Eyewear Is Ideal for Snow and Winter Sports?, All About Vision, 27 February 2019, allaboutvision.com, retrieved 6 September 2026). The AAO, for its part, lists snowy environments among the places polarised lenses help. When specialists disagree, the practical answer is to ask what you need to see: if it is ice, go non-polarised.

Why do polarised lenses black out my phone screen?

Because the screen is already polarised. LCD and many other displays emit light that is polarised in one direction. When the filter in your lens is aligned across that direction, the screen dims or turns dark. Tilt your head and it comes back. The AAO lists the everyday casualties: “car dashboard controls”, “ATM cash machines” and “cell phones”.

For most people this is an occasional irritation: tilt the phone and the image returns. But if your outdoor working day is spent reading a tablet on a site, a chart plotter on a boat, or a cockpit screen, the irritation becomes a cost, and non-polarised is the right buy.

How do I check that sunglasses are really polarised and really UV400?

  1. Read the label or product page for two separate claims. “Polarised” and “UV400” (or “100% UVA/UVB”). One claim does not imply the other.
  2. Test polarisation against a screen. Hold the sunglasses at arm’s length in front of a phone or laptop screen and rotate them slowly through ninety degrees. A polarised lens will visibly darken the screen at one angle and clear at another. A non-polarised lens will not change.
  3. Test against a second polarised pair. Hold two polarised lenses one in front of the other and rotate one. At ninety degrees the overlap goes almost black. Two non-polarised lenses just get darker.
  4. Ask for the UV figure, not the darkness. A retailer that cannot state the UV specification cannot be trusted on it. Any optician can check a lens on a UV meter in seconds.
  5. Check the tint colour. The AOA recommends grey lenses “for proper color recognition”, which matters at traffic lights and brake lights. Brown and grey-green add contrast in haze and are the other two tints the FAA lists as acceptable for pilots.
  6. Check the frame covers your eyes. UV arrives from the sides too. The AOA suggests wraparound or close-fitting frames for extended outdoor exposure. A good fit does the same job on a conventional frame.

Are polarised lenses worth the extra cost?

For a driver, a commuter, or anyone who spends real hours outdoors near water, glass or paving, yes. Glare hides detail at the moment you need it, and polarisation is the only lens treatment that removes it rather than dimming it. How do I care for polarised lenses?

The polarising filter is a layer inside or on the lens, and heat and harsh chemicals can damage it. Three rules protect it: rinse grit off under running water before wiping, use a microfibre cloth rather than a shirt or paper towel, and never leave sunglasses on a dashboard in summer. When should I see an eye-care professional?

Sunglasses reduce glare and block UV. They are not a treatment for anything. If bright light causes pain rather than discomfort, if you see halos, if your night vision has changed, or if one eye reacts differently from the other, book an eye examination rather than a darker lens. Light sensitivity can be a symptom of conditions an optometrist or ophthalmologist needs to check. Nothing in this article replaces that.
